Our history
The Fernie Taphouse is a prominent and iconic establishment with a rich history.
A casualty of the Great Fire of 1908, which destroyed most of the downtown core, the building was rebuilt as prohibition began. The famous bootlegger’s basement tunnels still exist today! For decades after the Rum Running era, it continued as the community pub and hotel.
Simon and Wendy Howse, local outdoor enthusiasts and visionaries, purchased the historic Fernie Hotel in the 1990s. As founders of Parastone Developments, the region’s largest developer, they reimagined Fernie through their successful projects. Guided by Parastone’s values of excellence, integrity and community, the hotel and pub transformed. In 2019, it underwent another extensive renovation. The Fernie Taphouse is now the elevated and refreshed hub of downtown, complete with a new up-leveled menu.
